At Hunter Fighter Collection (HFC), we are not just restoring aircraft—we’re bringing history back to life. And sometimes, the most extraordinary stories are written not just in the skies, but through the partnerships forged. One such inspiring collaboration is the HFC journey with REC Watches, whose passion for preserving history resonates deeply with their mission.
In 2021, REC Watches reached out to HFC with a bold idea: to create a limited-edition timepiece using actual aluminium from Spitfire X4009, the legendary aircraft flown by Australian fighter ace, Flight Lieutenant Paterson Clarence Hughes DFC, during the Battle of Britain. This aircraft, which is now under restoration by HFC, holds a special place in history, as did Hughes himself—a hero credited with up to 17 victories before his tragic death in 1940.
REC’s motto, “recover – recycle – reclaim,” is a perfect reflection of the work done at HFC. Together, we embarked on a project to craft the Spitfire X4009 watch, an exquisite tribute to Hughes and his incredible wartime service. But beyond creating this beautiful timepiece, REC Watches made an extraordinary commitment: a percentage of the proceeds from each watch would go directly towards the restoration and rebuild of the aircraft itself.
Every Spitfire X4009 watch sold not only connects the owner to a piece of aviation history but also plays a vital role in ensuring that this historic aircraft flies again. Thanks to REC’s generosity, the restoration has progressed Stage 2 of the build, where critical work is being carried out at Airframe Assemblies on the Isle of Wight UK. The fuselage sheet metal kit is to be completed, and the sub-assembly of fuselage frames will soon be underway. Several major components, including the spar carry-throughs, have been constructed, bringing us ever closer to the day when Spitfire X4009 will fly once more. Once the fuselage is skinned, the structure of X4009 will be shipped to Scone, NSW, Australia, where Vintage Fighter Restorations will complete the work to get X4009 airworthy.
This project wasn’t just about preserving an aircraft; it’s about preserving the legacy of those who fought for freedom. It’s about ensuring that future generations can witness the living history of Paterson Clarence Hughes DFC, Australia’s highest-scoring Battle of Britain ace, and understand the magnitude of his contribution. Not just a timepiece, the watches have created a pathway for HFC to connect with the community.
The response from those who’ve purchased the Spitfire X4009 watch has been overwhelming. Many proud Australians have reached out to tell us how honoured they feel to own a piece of this legacy. With every watch sold, HFC has moved one step closer to seeing X4009 restored to airworthy condition—a powerful symbol of courage, sacrifice, and perseverance.
Ross Pay, Chairman, and John Parker, Public Officer of HFC shared their thoughts on this incredible partnership: “REC Watches’ generosity and commitment to preserving this historic aircraft is nothing short of inspiring. The Spitfire X4009 watch is not only a beautiful tribute but a vital part of our restoration journey. What REC Watches has done for this project is remarkable. Their support has enabled us to tackle some of the most challenging aspects of the restoration. We’re deeply grateful, and their contribution will forever be a part of this aircraft’s story.”
This collaboration between REC Watches and HFC has breathed new life into the restoration of Spitfire X4009, and with each passing day, HFC can move closer to achieving the dream of seeing this iconic aircraft back in the skies. Together, we are not just restoring an aircraft—we are safeguarding a piece of history for generations to come.
Thank you to REC Watches and all who continue to support this incredible project. Their generosity is helping history take flight once more.
